Our involvement in the construction of the new Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre (formerly knows as The Calgary Cancer Centre) has given us a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on Canada’s Health Care System. We’re honoured to have played a crucial role in this project through our delivery of the electrical and technology scopes of work. This cutting-edge facility will purposefully revolutionize cancer care in Canada, and we take pride in contributing to such an important cause.
On Friday, November 3, 2017, the construction team led by PCL broke ground on one of the nation’s largest multifunctional healthcare facilities. The 2.1 million sqft building will specialize in providing comprehensive treatment plans tailored to the physical, mental, emotional, and social needs of each patient.
Thoroughly equipped with its 161 inpatient bed units, 22 short-stay patient units, and over 100 examination rooms, the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre is getting ready to provide life-saving cancer treatment. Patients will have access to more than 100 chemotherapy chairs, 13 Linac Radiation Therapy Vaults, clinical and operational support services, and outpatient cancer clinics. Additionally, the facility will offer 100,000 sqft of laboratory and research space dedicated to the ongoing fight to conquer cancer.
At the start of the project, PCL Construction, Modern Niagara, and the Canem/Plan Group Joint Venture collaborated on creating an award-winning Building Information Model (BIM) complete with Asset Information Management (AIM) to support post-construction facility management workflows. By leveraging the power of Revit, our JV team was able to create a comprehensive model that integrated electrical, building automation, fire alarm, security, communication, and technology systems into a single, cohesive solution.
Plan Group’s Technology Team and Canem Systems worked hard to ensure that the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre has the same world-class standard of care as the most technologically advanced SMART Hospitals. We designed and implemented a sophisticated communications pathway to distribute fibre optic network connection throughout the entire building. This secure network infrastructure was designed to provide instantaneous data processing, allowing integrated systems to communicate over a single, facility-wide converged network. This approach eliminates any barriers between OT and IT systems so that all data is accessible on the same network.
The Plan Group and Canem team successfully executed over 1.4M person-hours on the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the additional obstacles presented by the pandemic, the team was able to continue their work and deliver the project with minimal disruption.
Working in unison with our JV partners, we had the extraordinary opportunity to unite our businesses and tackle the significant P3 project as one. With our +450-person team, we were able to model the electric conduits, transformers, cable trays, electrical panels, lighting fixtures, and electrical rooms. We also successfully installed PVC conduit into the building’s floors, completed renovations and upgrades at the Foothills Medical Centre and installed and configured the Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) T3 systems for this project. This was only made possible thanks to the invaluable support and collaboration of our incredible JV Partners at Canem Systems.
As of December 9, 2022, Alberta Infrastructure has proudly announced that the construction of the state-of-the-art cancer care facility is officially complete. Our team at Plan Group is proud to be a part of the powerful team that helped make it all possible.
