It’s official! Our mechanical team recently received a substantial certificate of completion for the cornerstone of Centennial College’s Block A expansion – a new solid wood academic tower on the Progress campus.
One of the building’s most remarkable features is that it is constructed almost entirely from solid wood, a sustainable and renewable alternative building material. The use of solid wood in construction offers several benefits, including reducing the building’s carbon footprint, improving indoor air quality and creating a warm, natural architectural aesthetic. What’s more, the tower’s solid-wood construction made the building process faster and more efficient than conventional methods.
The building was designed with sustainability in mind, with features such as a green roof, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems. We were tasked with providing a fully integrated mechanical system that included a VRF system, air-source heat pump, air handling units, fans, chimney and even some mechanical solar panels! As mechanical subcontractors to the project, #TeamPlanGroup is proud of its contribution to this exciting achievement.
The new Mass Timber Academic Tower will house several academic programs, including engineering technology, environmental sciences and architecture. The building includes classrooms, offices, laboratories, other learning spaces, a cafeteria and an outdoor terrace.
This project is an excellent example of how the Plan Group supports innovative and sustainable construction to help provide a modern and functional learning environment for students and faculty while actively building a greener future for us all. We are honored to have been involved in such an innovative project.
Congratulations to everyone involved!
